Brief Mining History: Galena, SD

In my continuing efforts to bring tourists to the Black Hills I will post a couple of old pictures of mines the Galena area.

Image result for galena sd Sitting Bull Mine: 1879, $14,000 in silver and lead was shipped from here. Silver was going for $1.00 per ounce and lead went for between one cent and five cents per pound.

Bottom right of the five men on the left, distinguished bowler hat, owned the Branch Mint. As you can see he invested heavily in equipment only to rarely use it. This Galena mine went into receivership in 1912.

Image result for aunt sally, Galena, SD Aunt Sally was the first non-native female to enter the Black Hills. She was a cook with the 1874 Custer expedition. Sally returned to the Black Hills in 1876 and eventually settled near Galena. She passed in April 1888, her age is uncertain some sources say she was in her fifties when she came with Custer. While her age may be uncertain she was respected and liked by all who knew her.
