Mt. Rushmore National Monument January 17, 2019

Ah yes, the government shut down continues, hurt the powerless and ignore the powerful. Rapid City is engulfed in "rime ice" which I posted some pictures of earlier so we decided to drive to Mt. Rushmore and take a look. Xanterra is keeping the bookstore and cafe (and restrooms) open and people working which is great. You still have to pay for your parking but this time of year is a quiet and reflective time to visit the monument. Take in the lives of these great men and compare their lives to what we have in Washington (both parties) today.
You can pull off the highway and get this view of Rushmore on the approach.

Sunshine and no people. This isn't a bad time of year to visit the Black Hills. If the sun is out the weather will be comfortable due to low humidity.

I'm thinking the trail is closed because of the ice covering it and there is no one to rescue you if you fall and hurt yourself.
