BFTP: Brasil 2006 Part II

Last Post of 2018......not sure where the time goes but may your 2019 be blessed.
The second part of our trip (we were in Altamira for almost a month) was on the Xingu River to share our faith and deliver a water purifier to a remote village.

Traditional fishing boat, leaks enough to keep your minnows alive.

Steps to the door of home along the river.

Beto, a great young man who traveled with us.

We stopped to assist this family who had been on this island in the Xingu for a couple of months because their boat broke down. The husband had repaired the boat but was waiting for help to get it back in the water. We assisted in that project.

 Altamira, Para, Brasil

Where we were delivering the water purifier.

 Fish, salted and drying.

BFTP: Brasil 2006 Part I

Twelve years ago Vicki and I returned to Altamira with a small team to work on a building started our first trip.

A camp has people, people need places to go to the bathroom, the bathroom needs a septic system. These guys did unbelievable work getting a 15'x15'x15' hole dug and the lining started. When you are located just a few degrees from the equator it's hot in June.

One of the main gate posts, most of the work was done with manpower. The post weighed in around 900 pounds so this wasn't a simple project.

Meat choices hang in the windows. This is not where we bought our meat. Not sure our sensitive American stomachs could have eaten this.

The project. Hope these posts from a warm climate make your winter a bit cozier.

BFTP: March 2008

Pictures from over  10 years ago. Travels to Estes Park with the Koch's. Great trip, snow shoeing and good friends. All of us have retired since this trip.

Most of these were taken in the Bear Lake area where snow is almost always good for snow shoeing.

December 13, 2018 hike to Sheridan Lake

Beautiful December day at home, temperature was in the mid 40s with bright sun and low humidity so we decided that a hike on our favorite trail was in order. It was 36 at Spring Creek trailhead and still some snow cover. With the sun much lower on the horizon there are many areas that are untouched by the sun during the day.

We both wore grippers on our boots. The trail was covered with snow and ice. There are areas where a slip can mean a drop of 40' or more.

Still working on that shadow hikers look.

Three bridge crossings, again, very glad to have grippers on our feet.

Sod House: additional photos

About 15 miles south of Hettinger, ND is this sod house. I had posted an earlier picture but our friend who actually lived the first months of her life here loaned me some pictures to scan and post.

These interior pictures are what amazed me. Lana had told us of her youth playing in the "toy" kitchen with a stove and real ice box. Those of us who didn't grown up around soddies and had to depend upon history books for our pictures have an inaccurate image of life. Notice the joists for a second floor.

Still implements of an earlier life hanging on the wall. I see the ice tongs toward the right and a trap hanging on the wall on the left.

From the past: Fort Creve Couer Rendezvous September 2007

Central Illinois offered a wealth of opportunities for an educator to take photos of living history. These are a few from the annual Fort Creve Couer gathering. I encourage local history educators to be sure and visit this wonderful event.
